Legal Meaning

Protection zone for a protected tree means the area defined under section 13 of the Urban Forest Act 2023 (ACT), including the area beneath the tree canopy, the surrounding canopy projection area, and the area surrounding the trunk, unless a different protection zone is specified in an applicable tree management plan.

A TPZ is the area around a retained tree that must be protected from damaging excavation, compaction, storage and construction activity. Its exact extent and permitted encroachments should be established by the applicable tree rules, arborist information and approval conditions.
