Legal Meaning

Rear zone means the area of a block behind the primary building zone.

Plain English

The rear zone is the part of the block behind the primary building zone. It is therefore not simply whatever area happens to be behind the existing house. Rear-zone rules can limit the scale, height or position of buildings to protect neighbouring amenity, solar access, privacy, landscaping and backyard character.
