Legal Meaning

Planting area means an area of land within a block that is available for landscape planting and that is not covered by buildings, structures, vehicle parking and manoeuvring areas or any other form of impermeable element that impacts permeability of the ground surface (i.e., terraces, pergolas, patios, decks, or pools).

Plain English

Planting area is land on the block that remains available for landscaping and allows water to enter the ground. It cannot be occupied by buildings, parking, driveways or other impermeable features such as many terraces, patios, decks, pergolas or pools. A grassed area or garden bed may count if it meets the applicable requirements. Planting area is not necessarily the same as deep soil zone, which also requires sufficient unobstructed soil below ground for tree roots.
