Legal Meaning

A townhouse is a residential unit that is commonly registered as a Class B unit under an ACT unit title scheme, where the unit has its own ground footprint and the owner generally owns the inside and outside of the unit and any associated land within the unit boundary. Townhouses typically do not have units above them and share ownership of common property with other unit owners through the owners corporation.

Plain English

Townhouses are commonly developed as separate homes within a multi-unit development and may be owned individually through a unit title arrangement. They are different from a dual occupancy because a townhouse development usually contains multiple dwellings, rather than just two.
