A lease purpose clause is a provision in a Crown lease that identifies the permitted use or purpose of the leased land. Development or use of the land must be consistent with the purpose authorised by the lease, unless the lease is varied or another approval pathway permits the proposed use.
The part of the Crown lease stating what the land may lawfully be used for and sometimes the number or type of dwellings or other development allowed. A proposal may satisfy the planning zone but still require the lease to be varied if it is outside the purpose clause.
