Legal Meaning

A Crown lease is a lease of land granted by the Territory under the Planning and Development Act 2007 (ACT), under which the lessee obtains a legal estate or interest in the land for the term and purpose specified in the lease, while the land remains vested in the Crown (the Territory). A Crown lease is a registrable interest in land and may be recorded on the ACT Land Titles Register.

Plain English

The principal ACT document giving the lessee the right to occupy and use a parcel of Territory land. It is registered on the Land Titles Register and includes legal terms, the lease term and permitted purposes. The lessee can own and transfer the leasehold interest, but the land remains within the ACT leasehold system.
